Calling all Pogues: Netflix’s hit YA show Outer Banks has been officially renewed for Season 2. That means more sun, more sand, more treasure hunting, and (hopefully) a whole lot more of John B (Chase Stokes) and Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline).

Created by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, who will all return as showrunners and executive producers for Season 2, Outer Banks follows a group of kids from the wrong side of the tracks — the Pogues — in North Carolina’s Outer Banks who discover the location of some missing, sunken treasure, and end up in a race against time to reclaim the water-logged loot. In between treasure hunting, they find plenty of time for romantic entanglements, clashing with the rich kids on the other side of OBX — called Kooks — and one absolutely iconic rainkiss.

When we left off in Season 1’s cliffhanger — and spoilers past this point, my Pogues — John B and Sarah Cameron were on the run and presumed dead after John B was framed for the murder of Sheriff Peterkin (Adina Porter). The twist? The bad guy hunting them down was none other than Sarah Cameron’s father, Ward (Charles Esten), who also killed John B’s father and stole the treasure that was his birthright. All hope wasn’t lost, though: turns out the ship that rescued John B and Sarah Cameron from a watery death was heading to Nassau, the location Ward had sent the treasure to. The hunt was — and now, is — on!

Side-note: yes, you are legally required to use the characters’ full names every time you refer to them. It’s an OBX thing, you wouldn’t understand.

Also embroiled in the action are John B’s best friend Kiara (Madison Bailey), who tentatively struck up a romance with the brainy Pope (Jonathan Daviss) at the end of the season; the unhinged but loyal JJ (Rudy Pankow); and on the side of the pop-collared Kooks, Sarah Cameron’s ex-boyfriend Topper (Austin North), her druggie brother Rafe (Drew Starkey), and his friend Kelce (Deion Smith). All of the aforementioned cast members are set to reprise their roles in Season 2.

As for what may happen in Season 2? Jonas Pate broke down a little bit of his four to five season plan for the show for EW back when the show premiered in April, and noted that Netflix had them writing Season 2 scripts before Season 1 even dropped.

“We’ll definitely have at least a part of season 2 that’ll take place in the Bahamas,” Pate said, “but it’ll all come back to the Outer Banks because that’s our spiritual home. So we’ll get back to the Outer Banks pretty quickly, I’m sure, but there’ll be definitely an episode or two that that has some Bahamas in it.”

We’ll also see some “new villains,” and the story will “broaden,” while still sticking to the main elements of what made the first season so successful.

And as for when Season 2 of Outer Banks will premiere? Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, filming isn’t really happening in South Carolina — the show decided not to film in OBX itself because of North Carolina’s restrictive LGBTQ+ legislation. Depending on how things pan out with, you know… The world… Expect a late 2021, 2022 debut date, at the earliest.
