After a news week that felt more like years, it was only a matter of time before The View devolved into chaos. On Friday morning, a Hot Topic about  the “send her back” chant at Trump’s North Carolina rally quickly flew off the rails when the women of the ABC talk show — who are all on the same side of the issue, it should be noted — began screaming at each other from across the table. Things got particularly heated between Meghan McCain and Joy Behar, who asked why conservatives upset by the president’s remarks “don’t open their mouths.” Exploded McCain, “Stop asking me why Republicans are standing by! We know why there are!”

Friday’s blow-up was the result of a tense week in the news, and as a result, on the show. The women of The View have been condemning Trump’s attacks on the congresswomen known as “The Squad” all week, and on Friday, that frustration boiled over during a discussion about the president’s recent disavowal of the “send her back” rally chant. The women all dismissed Trump’s claim that he shut down the chant quickly — the show timed that segment of his speech and revealed that it took 14 seconds for him to begin speaking again after it broke out — with Sunny Hostin saying, “The bottom line is that he didn’t tell them to stop. He gave them permission to say it.”

After guest co-host Ana Navarro delivered an emotional speech about the “self-righteous hypocrisy” of many Republicans, McCain noted that Navarro isn’t the only conservative who is shaken by Trump’s remarks; in fact, she’s “gotten a lot of interesting phone calls … because this is that bad.” Continued McCain, “My answer to Democrats is, if you can’t beat this, what are you doing? This shouldn’t be this hard to beat. This is so bad. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen.”

A few moments later, McCain again said that there are “a lot of hardcore conservatives” she knows that are “very, very, very upset” about this. Her comment set off Behar, who fired back, “I’m so sorry to hear that. Why don’t they open their mouths?” McCain immediately went off. “You know what, Joy? Because some of them are private citizens and friends of mine and don’t have the kind of platforms we do!” The conservative co-host went on to say that normal Republicans are “tagged with this right now,” and it’s “humiliating” and “embarrassing” for the party. “I don’t know what else we can do other than that we are calling it out as loud as we can with the platforms we have,” she yelled over Navarro’s protests.

Things got fiery again when Sunny Hostin asked why “Republican leadership [is] denouncing the chants but not the leader of the chants?” The women began yelling, with McCain interrupting to tell her co-hosts that it’s about “power.” Finally, McCain exploded. “I don’t know why this question keeps getting asked! It’s obviously about power. I’m sorry, this is not a complicated question,” she said. “Just stop asking me why Republicans are standing by! We know why they are!”

The women continued to yell, leaving Behar no choice but to throw the show to commercial. “We’ll be right back,” she said, slamming her hand on the table and rolling her eyes. “We’ve got to go.” Oof. Enjoy the weekend, ladies!
