Game of Thrones stars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are fully aware that the world thinks they’re in love (sorry, Joe Jonas), and they’re super into it. On Wednesday night, Turner stopped by Conan to promote her new film X-Men: Dark Phoenix, but of course, there was a much more pressing issue that needed to be discussed: her relationship with Williams. Turner told host Conan O’Brien that when she and Williams first heard the rumors about their relationship, they “played into it” and began to jokingly “kiss each other” while filming scenes for Game of Thrones. “Sometimes you just want to make out with your best friend,” said Turner.
During their wide-ranging interview (that also featured a game of “Tequila Slaps”), O’Brien recalled attending a Game of Thrones wrap party with the entire cast. “I noticed that you and Maisie Williams are clearly — it’s no act — you’re like best friends,” said O’Brien. “No, yeah, the purest form,” replied Turner. “It was funny, you two were sort of inseparable that night,” continued the host. “And there were people, I know, just in the world that thought for a while, you two are so close, are they a couple?”
“We fully knew about it. We played into it,” said Turner. “On the set we would kind of do the scene and then kiss each other in the middle of the scene and see if anyone would react.” Unfortunately, that didn’t quite generate the reaction she and Williams were hoping for. “It’s Game of Thrones, so incest is so normal that they were just like, ‘Okay. That’s fine,'” recalled the actress. “It was probably the most tame thing that happened on the show, actually.”
“So you actually wanted to get it out there that you two were a couple as just sort of a joke?” asked O’Brien. “Yeah, but you know, sometimes you just want to make out with your best friend,” said the Dark Phoenix star. “Tell me about it,” said O’Brien, pointing at his sidekick Andy Richter. “I bet you’re feeling it right now,” he continued. “It’s pretty mechanical by now. It’s been a lot of years,” replied Richter.
