In a famous 2014 article called “How Netflix Reverse Engineered Hollywood,” The Atlantic‘s Alexis Madrigal discovered that the streaming giant had created 76,897 “micro-genres” for its catalog, ranging from “Emotional Fight-the-System Documentaries” to “Period Pieces About Royalty Based on Real Life.” Well, would you be surprised to learn that among these 76,000-plus genres, a few of them are about some of the naughtier selections in their catalog?
Decider did some digging and found 61 different micro-genres that involve the word “steamy.” You can start really broad by looking at the entire “steamy” genre, or whittle down a bit by sub-genre (“Steamy Foreign Dramas”), time period (“Steamy Crime Movies from the 1980s”), or, for those of you with discerning taste, critic-approved steamy movies (like “Critically-acclaimed Steamy Independent Dramas”).
