Girls returned to HBO last night with the first episode of its sixth and final season, which concludes in April. The show has always been unapologetic about its laissez-faire attitudes towards nudity and sex—creator/director/producer/star Lena Dunham left veteran TV journalist Maria Shriver very flustered Friday with the mere mention of a “penis” on The Today Show—and last night’s premiere was no exception. Two of the four leading ladies went completely au naturel.
When Marnie (Allison Williams) asks on-again, off-again boyfriend Ray (Alex Karpovsky) to move out, he returns to his believed-to-be-vacant apartment, having received no text message reply from its latest occupant, Jessa (Jemima Kirke). Opening the door, he sees that Jessa is very much at home, eating yogurt naked on his couch as her current romantic partner, Adam (Adam Driver), searches for another spoon in a pair of black briefs. They’ve also relegated Ray’s possessions to a pile in the corner. “We needed to clear a space for sex reason,” Adam explains.
Meanwhile, dispatched to Montauk to cover the rise of surf culture among female one-percenters, Hannah (Dunham) bails on a surf lesson taught by Paul-Louis (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Riz Ahmed). Paul-Louis finds her in a bar, she buys him drinks and they dance before going home together, where they attempt sex but she can’t seem to find a comfortable position. The next morning, Hannah awakes to throw up daquiris from the top bunk they’re sharing. Wearing nothing but a sunburn, she crawls down the ladder to clean up the mess and return to her room. “Oh shit, you know what? You’ve got a lot of pubic hair,” Paul-Louis alerts her. “What the f*ck did you just say?” “No I just noticed because I’ve seen a lot of different bushes around the world and that’s just like totally, it’s own style, he replies. Hannah counters: “For your information this is what adult women look like when they’re using their pubic hair the way that, like, whatever, the lord intended. Which is to protect their vaginas. So thank you for pointing that out.”
From the looks of this episode two teaser, Hannah’s roadtripping will continue next week with a stop in Poughkeepsie.
