Hulu has dropped the documentary Roseanne For President! on their service just in time for Inauguration Day. Roseanne For President! follows comedian Roseanne Barr‘s 2012 presidential run in great detail and it shines a light on the unique political moment that we live in today. Namely, we’re seeing a rise in the “celebrity” candidate just as our two-party system seems to be leaving more and more Americans behind.
In between Barr’s trademark barbs — “I’m uniquely qualified to serve the American people because I was a waitress for fifteen years” — there’s a lot of serious political commentary. The documentary starts with Barr giving a stump speech on the campaign trail where she very soberly tackles the rottenness of the current political landscape. Just as she decries the idea of voting for the lesser of two evils, she pushes her plan for single-payer health care for all. The film follows Barr first as she competes against Dr. Jill Stein to be the Green Party’s Presidential candidate and later when she switches to the Peace and Freedom Party.

According to director Eric Weinrib, the film is more important than ever:

“Now more than ever, it’s important to take a close look at our two-party system and the electoral process itself. I wish the movie wasn’t as prescient as it is but since we’re going to hell in a hand basket, we might as well enjoy the ride. Roseanne’s small, renegade campaign says big things about how our political system works by highlighting how it doesn’t and poking vicious fun at both big party politics and bizarre third party rabbit-holes along the way.”

Roseanne For President! is now streaming on Hulu.
