In wake of the destruction and chaos caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, much of New York City was effectively shut down due to massive flooding in the streets and subway lines as well as power outages in and around the city. Despite the state of emergency, Uproxx reports, via The Daily Beast, that Donald Trump privately forced employees of his reality series The Apprentice to return to work in the days directly following the super storm.

Multiple staffers told The Beast that they were told to report to Trump Tower on Tuesday, October 30, just one day after Hurricane Sandy, one of the most destructive storms to ever hit New York, had shut down most of the city. In October of 2012, the long-running NBC reality series would have been shooting Season 13, a celebrity version of the show featuring Bret Michaels, Omarosa, Stephen “Hates His Brother Alec’s Trump Impression” Baldwin, LaToya Jackson, and Dennis Rodman.

“There was an internal email that [had] gone out for the crew — Hurricane Sandy hit, and we were all made to come into [Trump Tower] the day after the storm,” said a former Apprentice staffer, who requested anonymity due to a non-disclosure agreement signed by production. “I was personally really pissed off… Everyone said Trump was fully aware.”

“We all worked the day after,” another former staffer told The Daily Beast. “The whole city was shut down. It was really irresponsible and selfish… Like, no one was under the illusion that we were making fine art here, that it had to be pushed that hard. It was crazy. Business in the city had basically shut down.”

Despite making staffers brave the dangerous conditions, Trump sent out a tweet on October 29 that said “We are taking care of hundreds of people in the Trump Tower atrium — they are seeking refuge. Free coffee and food.”

The next day The Beast reports that Trump claimed that “thousands” of people sought refuge in the Trump Tower atrium, which according to the website for Trump Tower New York, the hotel’s atrium is only big enough to hold up to 350 guests.

Since the staff courageously endured the elements to bring you the thirteenth season of The Apprentice, it should be noted that the series concluded with country singer Trace Adkins defeating noted magician Penn Jillette to become the first all-star celebrity apprentice.
