Mo’Nique Calls For A Netflix Boycott After Being Offered $10.5 Million Less Than Amy Schumer

Where the hell is Mo’Nique? It’s a question we find ourselves asking from time to time around these parts, mainly because we wish she was in everything. Today, though, the Oscar-winning comedienne surfaced in an interview with soda-slurping gossiphound Harvey Levin on TMZ TV, spilling ALL the tea about her recent negotiations with Netflix.

“Last week, I received an offer from Netflix for $500,000 to do a comedy special,” she began. “However, Amy Schumer got an offer from Netflix for $11 million. Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle got offers for $20 million. When my husband, who is also my manager, wanted to have a conversation with Robbie Praw —who is the Vice President of Comedy at Netflix— to ask him how the numbers were so different, Robbie Praw couldn’t even get back on the phone with us to discuss it. He was too busy.”

Harvey Levin then somewhat condescendingly tried to explain how negotiating works, and asked Mo’Nique why she didn’t take her talents elsewhere if she didn’t like the amount she was offered.

“I’m a black woman in Hollywood, Harvey,” she responded. “Why should I have to take it somewhere else when my comedian brothers and sisters have been given these offers based off of their resumes and their tenure in the business?”

She immediately followed-up: “When you look at my resume, I am the most decorated alive. I am the most decorated comedian alive.” (She might not be wrong, either: Name me another comedian alive who has won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a SAG, a BAFTA and an NAACP Image award?)

Harvey then tried his best to prod Mo’Nique into labeling Netflix racist, but Mo’Nique is too smart for that. Instead, she explained Netflix’s lowball negotiation strategy thusly: “It’s gender bias. It’s color bias.”

Does Mo’Nique have a point here? She certainly does. Amy Schumer’s $11 million Netflix hour, The Leather Special, was received so poorly by the Netflix community that it led to Netflix to ditch their five-star ratings program outright. (And, it should be noted, that Amy Schumer was able to extract even more than her original $11 million payday from Netflix’s coffers after she discovered what Rock and Chappelle were being paid.) While Schumer certainly has more heat, career-wise, than Mo’Nique at the moment, let the record show that Mo’Nique has been building her bonafides and fanbase since the late ’90s. And, as we mentioned above, Mo’Nique also has Oscar in her corner.

Mo’Nique also pleaded her case to SiriusXM’s Sway Calloway on his popular “Sway In The Morning” show earlier today. You can watch that entire interview below:

While we don’t expect Netflix to do much to woo back Mo’Nique after she took this beef VERY public, we hope that somebody (HBO? Showtime?) gives Mo what she deserves. After all, we don’t want to have to keep asking ourselves “Where the hell is Mo’Nique?” when this extremely talented actress deserves more.
