Laura Benanti’s Pitch Perfect Melania Trump Impression Is Your New Comedy Obsession

Melania Trump has had a rough couple of days. After delivering what seemed to be a marvelously poised and polished speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention, she was ambushed by accusations that she lifted key phrases of her speech from one that First Lady Michelle Obama made at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. (She also apparently worked in a “RickRoll” during the speech, too.)

So far, Trump hasn’t been able to defend herself in her own words — unless you count her “appearance” last night on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Broadway powerhouse Laura Benanti debuted her polished Melania Trump impression and, guys, it’s pretty darn great.

A few months ago, Benanti joked on the program that she bears a striking resemblance to Donald Trump’s wife and that she hoped he would do well in the primaries so she could take full advantage of the acting opportunities. Well, last night, Benanti finally got her chance! Colbert introduced her as “his friend” Melania Trump and Benanti took to the podium to defend her speech…by plagiarizing other popular soundbites. As Vulture points out, it’s a truly fantastic impression that could be this election cycle’s equivalent of Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is live all week and so far it’s been pretty great. Last night the big buzz was that Colbert returned as “Colbert” and Jon Stewart is poised to return later this week.
