‘Bare’ Is Now On Netflix: More Proof Web Series Creators Are Taking Over The World

New on Netflix is Bare. Starring Dianna Agron (Glee), Paz de la Huerta (Enter the Void), and Chris Zylka (The Leftovers), the coming-of-age drama follows wayfaring Sarah Barton (Agron), a twenty something grocery store cashier who’s desperate to get away from her one-horse town and out of her sweet but mundane relationship with sweet but mundane Haden (Zylka). Enter Pepper (de la Huerta): a drifter desperate for adventure and, conveniently enough, a companion to accompany her on a trip to Reno. What unfolds isn’t your typical journey of self-discovery nor romance. Pepper challenges Sarah to reconsider who she is, who she was, who she loves, and where she’s going amidst a hazy, unfamiliar world of tempting but turbulent nightlife.

Written and directed by web series creator turned feature producer, Natalia Leite, Bare marks yet another leap of small to big screen in the web series revolution. Though Bare isn’t based on any previous web-based project, Leite and her right-hand collaborator, Alexandra Roxo (who makes an appearance in Bare) are the minds behind the award-winning short form comedy, Be Here Nowish. As visceral as it is hysterical, Be Here Nowish is a one-of-a-kind L.A. story told from the perspective of queer protagonists. Think if Transparent married Broad City and had a wild, beautiful baby and you kind of get the picture.

But Leite and Roxo aren’t the only ones. Bridey Elliott, John Early, Katja Blichfeld, Ben Sinclair: these are all names, if you haven’t heard already, you will soon enough. Elliott, featured on YouTube favorite Low Budget Sketch Show, recently starred in sleeper comedy Fort Tilden. John Early, who co-wrote Monica Lewinsky parody web series, Monica, has been featured everywhere from 30 Rock to Broad City and Wet Hot Summer: First Day of Camp. Get ready to see even more of of Early as he gets his own spotlight in Netflix’s upcoming The Characters, an episodic sketch show dedicating to introducing the world to eight emerging comedians. And last, but certainly not least: Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair. The husband-and-wife team, lovingly dubbed “The Cannabis Couple” by adoring followers, also got their start on 30 Rock — Blichfeld a casting director and Sinclair a guest star — before smoking up and creating their own stoner-friendly web anthology series, High Maintenance. The critical darling leaped from cult favorite to Vimeo exclusive to HBO acquisition: putting them at the forefront of today’s current web to episode format in a precedent laid by Drunk History, Burning Love, Children’s Hospital, Broad City, and, most recently, HBO’s Animals.

So before you here anymore about Natalia Leite and Alexandra Roxo, make sure you watch Bare and its small screen, tangentially related predecessor, Be Here Nowish, available to stream exclusively on Vimeo on Demand.
