Last week’s episode of Outlander closed with Claire’s controversial decision to leave her beloved Jamie in the dark about Black Jack’s resurrection. As it turns out, the vile Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall managed to escape death and is still messing things up around the British Isles.

Black Jack isn’t just alive and well in the 1740s, but he lives on in his descendent Frank. Claire’s husband in the 1940s might be sweet and smart, but he showed an ugly aggression in the second season premiere.

We sat down with Tobias Menzies, who plays both the villainous Black Jack and the beleaguered Frank, and we asked him if there was a pointed connection between the two characters. Basically, is Frank secretly capable of the same evil as Black Jack?

“I think it’s something that Ron [D. Moore] and the writers and myself have chosen to do — to find these moments. That’s a conversation we’re having with the audience,” said Menzies. “Given that they’ve chosen to cast me as both men, it’s very easy. We can kind of have these ‘flares.'”

Time will tell if we’ll revisit Frank this season, but one thing’s for sure. If Black Jack Randall is still alive, he’s still going to spell trouble for our heroes.
