Debauchery. The word conjures up images of orgies, parties, drug use, and never-ending drinking. Debauchery also carries with it a certain amount of sinfulness. It’s not just that people are indulging in lust, gluttony, and a few illegal drugs. There’s an implication that the devil is at play. Of course, debauchery can also be loads of fun — even if you’re not the person partaking in it. If you’re too afraid to live a truly debauched lifestyle yourself, you can still live vicariously through some of film and television’s most famously hedonistic moments. What could be better? Well, what about being the actors who get to play out these crazy scenes without any recourse?
We got a chance to sit down with the cast of Blunt Talk recently and they dished on all the fun they had making the show. The series stars Patrick Stewart as a boozed up cable news anchor who indulges in all manner of naughty behavior. Of course, he’s not the only one who got to have fun.
Even if you can’t whip a guy with a towel, cavort with porn stars, or shoot up all the drugs in sight, you can still feel like you are. The titles on this list all feature men, women, and teens behaving badly and we can have fun watching them without feeling guilt or shame.
'Blunt Talk'
The new Starz sitcom Blunt Talk features a cast of characters at a cable news show that delight in their debauched lifestyles, even if their fun causes problems with the ratings. Patrick Stewart stars as Walter Blunt, a Falklands War vet who finds solace in drugs, booze, sex, nude portraiture, and being towel-whipped by his manservant. [Watch Blunt Talk on STARZ Play]
‘The Wolf of Wall Street’
Martin Scorcese’s most recent masterpiece has been heralded for its audacity, and criticized for its gleeful depiction of Wall Street excess. Jordan Belfort’s privileged world includes money, drugs, booze, crazy parties, gorgeous women, and flying little people. It’s a fever dream until it all comes crashing down. ‘True Blood’
HBO shows are known for their sex, nudity, and violence, but True Blood took it to the next level. Whereas other shows would use sex, drugs, and murder to jazz up a storyline or stun the audience, True Blood seemed to just be about debauchery. Okay, sure, it was about a vampire who fell in love with a psychic half-fairy human, who was also attracted to another vampire, and a werewolf. And there were pagan goddesses and anti-vampire coalitions. And…look, no one watched True Blood for the plot. [Where to Stream True Blood]
‘Skins’
All teen soap operas want to be considered edgy and scandalous, but the original British version of Skins might be the only one that simultaneously shows us the dirtiest sides of being a teen while also being one of the best showcases for young acting talent. The show follows three groups of Bristol teens as they struggle with addiction, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and their all consuming desire to get laid. [Watch Skins on Netflix]
‘Caligula’
Caligula is one of the most notorious films of all time. Penthouse wanted to make a high class adult film, so it hired Gore Vidal to write a script about the infamous Roman emperor and cast esteemed actors like Helen Mirren, Malcolm McDowell, John Gielgud, and Peter O’Toole in principal roles. While the film is big on nudity, partying, and excess, it’s low on artistic merit. The film was panned when it debuted and only is praised now as a cult classic curiosity. [Where to Stream Caligula]
‘Velvet Goldmine’
Velvet Goldmine is a weird, wonderful, and beautiful film that takes its own stab at David Bowie’s legend. While the film is technically fictional, it’s easy to see where Bowie, his wife, and his contemporary, Iggy Pop, fit in. You get glitter, orgies, and a lot of fantastic musical numbers to chew on.

‘Californication’
Californication follows the hedonistic misadventures of struggling novelist Hank Moody, played by David Duchovny. While the character might be a great writer, he’s also great at getting into drugs, booze, and sex. His playboy lifestyle isn’t all fun and games, though. ‘Enter the Void’
Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void has been called everything from pure genius to absolutely disgusting. The film follows the life and death of a drug dealer named Oscar. After he dies, we follow him as he observes everything from an out of body experience. It sounds straightforward enough, but Noé decided to use cinematic techniques to make the audience feel as though they were experiencing various psychedelic trips. His intrepid spirit even takes us inside a vagina during coitus. So, yeah, as arty as this film is, there’s a lot of sex and drugs and debauchery to be enjoyed — if you can handle it. ‘Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas’
Take a trip with Hunter S. Thompson’s Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo as they journey across the Nevada desert high on all sorts of drugs. ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’
The frat boys and college gals of National Lampoon’s Animal House might not be most misbehaved on this list, but you can’t deny that they set a new standard for how far parties should go on college campuses. By glorifying — and normalizing — debauched toga parties and keggers, this film inspired generations of freshmen to look at their time at university as space to have guilt-free fun.
