Only a month ago we were all speculating about whether or not The Interview would be released on streaming, and if so, where? Then it was released in select theaters and on VOD, and now it appears that it will be available to stream on Netflix.
CNN correspondent Brian Stelter tweeted out today that the controversial comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco will be on Netflix this Saturday and that it will be available at no additional charge to American and Canadian subscribers. This news comes on the heels of Sony announcing that The Interview recouped its $44 million budget in VOD sales. The speculation is that the Netflix deal will help defray the cost of the film’s estimated $20 million marketing budget.
One of the things that made watching The Interview so alluring was that the film was too “dangerous” to warrant its scheduled theatrical release. The film depicts North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un being assassinated to the tune of Katy Perry’s “Firework.” In retaliation, the North Korean government hacked Sony’s private corporate networks, leaked the info, and threatened mass terror attacks at theaters that showed the film. But now that The Interview will be free to stream on Netflix, does the film lose its edge? Or will it make you more likely to watch the film now that you won’t have to pay for it?
